Gomel State Medical University (GSMU)

Gomel State Medical University was founded in 1990 as per Resolution of the Council of Ministers and Order of the Minister of Health of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic. The Gomel State Medical University completely corresponds to the status of a modern higher school and is recognized by the World Health Organization. From the years of its existence, the University has prepared about 6355 doctors. The graduates of the University work in clinics of different cities of the Republic of Belarus, Newly Independent States and Western Europe, Middle East and Asia.

 

 

Today Gomel State Medical University has:

• 200 highly-qualified professors and assistant professors;
• 34 departments, 5 profiled research laboratories and 1 central research laboratory;
• 18 large clinics equipped in a modern way;
• the clinical base of the University is one of the best in Belarus, with advanced medical technologies on diagnostic and treatment of endocrinological, cardiologic, immunologic, hematologic, ophthalmologic, oncologic and other diseases;
• more than 2000 (including more than 370 overseas) students are taught at 4 faculties of the University;
• the library with rich volume of books and access to Internet, three reading halls is more than suffice for adequate preparation during the educational process;
• modern hostels with comfortable flats, lounges and physical training rooms;
• computer classes with access to the Internet.

 

 

For the years of its existence, the University has prepared more than 2000 doctors. Graduates of the University work in clinics of different cities of The Republic of Belarus, Newly Independent States, Western Europe, Middle East and Asia.

 

 

Now on the basis of faculty are working 5 faculties:

• curative;
• medical diagnostic;
• faculty of Foreign Students;
• internship and clinical residency;
• faculty of pre-university training;
• faculty of advanced training and retraining.

The main forms of research activities of the Gomel State Medical University are:

invention and innovation;

implementation of fundamental;

training of highly qualified scientific personnel;

organization of the student scientific society and the Council of young scientists;

publication of scientific literature (publication of monographs, journals, collections of articles and abstracts);

applied and contractual research work, as well as the organization and conduct of scientific conferences and seminars.

 

University scientists take part in the implementation of research on state programs, social orders in the field of fundamental research.

Among the main partners of the university are such foreign educational institutions as:

the University of Nagasaki (Japan);

Akita University (Japan);

Kursk Medical University (Russia);

University of Aberdeen (Scotland) and others.

Cooperation with the universities of Fukushima and Nagasaki (Japan) continues: joint research is being carried out on issues relevant to Belarus and Japan, in connection with the consequences of accidents at the Chernobyl NPP and the Fukushima-1 NPP.

Thanks to international projects and programs, the material and technical and educational and methodological base of the university is being strengthened, curricula are being developed and new programs are being introduced, training and advanced training of scientific and pedagogical personnel is being carried out.

In the system of personnel training, a special place is occupied by educational and ideological  work , the purpose of which is to create conditions for the formation of a personality with the civil qualities of a patriot, spiritual, moral and cultural and ethical values, possessing generally accepted rules of behavior in society, corresponding to the characteristics of a competent specialist, capable of self-realization and success.

Gomel State Medical University has science and progressive technologies, the latest equipment and modern teaching methods and most importantly – talented teachers, students and graduates in demand. The best results are achieved by the best specialists, which allows the university to occupy a leading position in the field of medical education, in the field of medical science and in the provision of medical care. The activities of the university are aimed at enhancing the best traditions of the domestic higher education, active integration of the university into the global educational space, the most complete and effective solution of the tasks set by the state in the rapidly changing realities of the XXI century.
