 Northwestern State Medical University named after I. I. Mechnikov (I. I. Mechnikov NWSMU)

is a higher education institution in St. Petersburg, formed in 2011 in connection with the merger of the I. I. Mechnikov St. Petersburg State Medical Academy with the St. Petersburg Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education.

 

Historical milestones of the great university

 

1885 – formation of the Clinical Institute of Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna.

1907 – establishment of the Psychoneurological Institute, the predecessor of the St. Petersburg State Medical Academy named after I.I. Mechnikov. 

1910 г. – official groundbreaking ceremony of the Peter the Great Hospital

1924 – the Clinical Institute acquires the new name of the State Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians (GIDUV).

1930 г. – The 2nd Leningrad Medical Institute (2nd LMI) begins its activity.

1941 – the 2nd Leningrad Medical Institute and the 2nd LMI were converted into military hospitals.

1947 – reorganization of the 2nd LMI into the Leningrad Sanitary and Hygienic Medical Institute (LSHMI).

1993 – transformation of the Leningrad State Institute for Advanced Medical Education into the St. Petersburg Academy of Postgraduate Education (MAPE).

2011 г. – Establishment of the I.I. Mechnikov North-Western State Medical University by merging the I.I. Mechnikov St. Petersburg State Medical Academy into the St. Petersburg Academy of Postgraduate Education.

 


Educational activity

 

There are about 4300 students studying at the University (about 3000 students on the budgetary form of education and 1200 – on places with payment of tuition fees). In addition to Russian citizens, more than 300 students from foreign countries study at I.I. Mechnikov NWSMU.

More than 650 medical interns and about 1100 clinical residents are trained at the University. Dissertation research is carried out by 460 postgraduate students, doctoral students and degree candidates.

About 30 thousand doctors improve their professional qualification annually.

 

Structure

 

In I.I. Mechnikov NWSMU education is carried out on Bachelor’s, Specialist, Master’s, Residency and Postgraduate programs at 7 faculties:

  • Surgical Faculty
  • Therapeutic Faculty
  • Faculty of Medicine and Biology

Medical activities

 

Multidisciplinary medical institution of I.I. Mechnikov NWSMU has its own distributed clinical base, including Peter the Great State Clinic, E.E. Eichwald Clinic, Medical and Preventive Center, Mycological Clinic, Family Medicine Center with a total bed capacity of 875 beds.

The University has 10 research laboratories, 2 research institutes and 1 scientific cluster. Research work at the University is carried out in accordance with the current directions of development of medical and biological sciences, considerable attention is paid to conducting research in the field of health protection and sanitary and epidemiological well-being of the population.

 

Scientific activity

 

Scientific developments at I.I. Mechnikov NWSMU are carried out jointly with more than 50 leading universities and research institutes of St. Petersburg, Russia and foreign countries, with 60 institutions of medical institutions and 25 pharmaceutical companies. Long-term strategy is focused on effective transfer of results of fundamental and applied scientific activity and building a favorable scientific and educational environment providing continuous training of highly qualified personnel.

International activities

 

The University has concluded more than 70 cooperation agreements with foreign educational and scientific institutions.

Within the framework of the academic mobility program more than 100 foreign students have undergone internship at the departments and clinical bases of I.I. Mechnikov NWSMU, and more than 200 Mechnikov students have been in practice abroad.

Summer medical schools – short-term internships for international students, with training in English – are in demand among students from all over the world.

 

Ratings

 

I.I. Mechnikov NWSMU is ranked 48th in the RAEX rating of the influence of Russian universities in 2020; 64th in 2021 and 73rd in 2022 in the RAEX rating of the best Russian universities; 88th in the Forbes rating of the best Russian universities, 34th in the RANCHIG rating of universities.

The university is ranked 472nd in the international academic rating of RUR.

In 2021 and 2022 the university took 801-900 position in the International rating “Three Missions of the University”.

Clinical units of I.I. Mechnikov NWSMU are annually included in the top of the best state clinics of St. Petersburg

High-quality education of a doctor in the XXI century, innovative scientific activity and implementation of its results in practical health care and education, highly effective medical care, as well as the formation of high morality and spirituality of a doctor – the main mission of the University.
