The Belarusian State Medical University is a leading higher medical education provider in the Republic of Belarus. The University has a strong international reputation across a wide range of disciplines. In its present form it was established in 1930 under the title of Minsk State Medical Institute, though the academic heritage can be traced back to 1921, when a Medical Faculty was created as a part of the Belarusian State University.

 

Some chronological events from the history of the university:

1925 — the first 21 graduates were released;

1930 — it was granted a status of Minsk Medical Institute;

June 1941 — Oct 1943 — the University temporarily stopped its activity because of the war. Later the activity was renewed in the city of Yaroslavl (Russia);

1944 — the University returned to its home place (Minsk);

1960 — the Dentistry Faculty was created. 1964 — the Pediatric and Preventive Medicine Faculties started their activity;

1967 — the Medical Faculty for International Students appeared within the University;

1995 — the Military Medicine Faculty was opened;

2001 — the University was granted its current title and status of the leading higher medical institution in Belarus with 64 divisions, 830 professors, associate professors, lecturers and research workers.

 

THERE ARE OVER 5500 REGISTERED FULL-TIME STUDENTS, FOLLOWING DIPLOMA PROGRAMS, POST -GRADUATE STUDENTS AND CLINICAL RESIDENTS

The teaching process is organized at six faculties, including General Medicine, Pediatrics, Preventive Medicine, Dentistry, Military Medicine and Faculty for International Students. The National Health Service Ministry regulates and continually assesses the teaching and learning styles of the University. The academic staff regularly participates in international conferences and symposia. Practical courses are taught at the best city hospitals and out-patient clinics which enable us to apply the most advanced teaching methods.

FACULTY OF GENERAL MEDICINE

 

Established on Oct 30, 1921, the Medical Department was an integral part of the Belarusian State University. Later, on June 21, 1930, it was granted a status of Minsk Medical Institute. In 2001 the Institute acquired its current title Belarusian State Medical University. Now it is a major Centre of medical training and research in Belarus with the University’s staff engaged in teaching 70 subjects within 55 academic departments. A tutorial staff of 245 professionals, including 25 specialists with Doctor of Science (medicine) and 134 with PhD (medicine) degrees are involved in training and research activities at the Faculty of General Medicine. The student population number is 2,500. Currently the Faculty trains students mainly in the adult population disease treatment and prophylaxis. For the time being the Faculty has released about 28,000 medical specialists many of them are the acknowledged leaders in their special field including Professors  E.V. Barkovsky, B.A. Slouka, N.F.Soroka, G.P Rychagov, S.I. Tretyak and others. After a compulsory one-year intern course they are granted the Certificates officially allowing them to start medical practice. They may also choose further specialization in gastroenterology, cardiology, traumatology, urology etc. and undergo a special training course in the corresponding field. To satisfy the diverse needs of students the Faculty is committed to ensure a good experience for all students and help them to settle better into academic and social life. It has a very active arts scene with its own PANATSEYA- Student Folk Theatre, which is always on the lookout for new recruits. Sport Clubs (basketball, volleyball, football etc.) are open to all, giving the chance to dip into activities outside the training course and meet students and staff across other disciplines. Special care is taken to provide the most suitable accommodation for international students, including married couples, which is usually in student hostels.

 

FACULTY FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS

 

For more than a quarter of a century the University has been engaged in training specialists for foreign countries. This is done on the contact basis. Training is conducted in Russian and English. The Faculty gives the opportunity to get 2 specialties: general medicine (course of study is 6 years) and stomatology (5 years).

 

 

PREPARATORY DEPARTMENT

 

The department is focused for those who wish to enter the University. Students can study as well as attain special training in Russian language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

 

 

FACULTY OF POSTGRADUATE STUDY

 

It gives good opportunity for graduates to get specialization in the following specialties:

EDUCATION AND STUDY

 

Renamed to Belarusian State Medical University in 2001. For many years the Faculty of General Medicine had been the only faculty of our University and trained doctors in practically all medical fields. After the establishment of other faculties, the Faculty of General Medicine trains specialists responsible for health care and its promotion, diagnostics, treatment, follow up and prevention of adult population diseases.

 

In 2011 the BSMU celebrated its 90th anniversary. Over these years the teaching staffs of the University has accumulated substantial methodological, clinical and scientific experience allowing the young generation of the country to get higher education meeting the highest modern standards. At present over 2600 students study here. Currently, over 400 specialists graduate annually from the Faculty compared with 21 doctors who were the first to receive the diploma of the University. During its existence the Faculty has trained over 28 thousand doctors, many of whom are acknowledged scientists, health care providers, outstanding surgeons, therapists and doctors of other specialties. The Faculty encompasses 20 Departments of the University. At present 258 members of the teaching staff work at the Faculty. Out of the general number of the staff 171 people have a scientific degree (74%), including 32 – Dr. Sci. 28 members have an academic title of professor of Medicine, 84– PhD in Medicine.

 

You will be trained under the guidance of the famous scientists, teachers and professors heading the Departments of the Faculty:

After entering the University, you will have to undergo a long way in the vast field of knowledge, to study numerous disciplines, to pass a great number of credit tests and examinations. At present the curriculum includes more than 70 subjects, including additional optional training courses taught by 54 departments of the University. The training period at the faculty is expected to last 6 years. You will be trained in the specialty called “general medicine”.

 

During the first two years of study the students master the subjects of medical-biological sciences, the fundamentals of humanities and social disciplines. The main subjects for students of the faculty are Normal Anatomy and Histology, Cytology and Embryology. The third year is aimed at mastering general professional disciplines.

 

Students interested in research have promising opportunities. During the period of education, already from the first year, students have an opportunity to join the students’ scientific society both at theoretical and clinical departments, to speak at meetings with reports. Especially diligent students prepare extended scientific presentations which are presented at BSMU annual students’ scientific conferences. Upon graduation the students who make excellent progress in the study and scientific work are offered the possibility to continue scientific research at BSMU and other leading scientific centers of the Republic of Belarus. The country leaders pay special attention to support and help of talented and gifted young people developing their potential and contributing to their future career. The students who have reached significant results in study, research work and socially useful activity are included in the Databank of gifted youth which allows the graduate not only to apply to prestigious workplaces, but also to get additional financial support from the state.

Despite difficulties in study the years at the University is the most remarkable period in the life of young people. Each student can try sports, amateur performances; become the author and the correspondent of the University newspaper. The national amateur group ‘Panatseya’ has been working at the faculty for more than three decades. The students’ club of the University welcomes all talented students. The administration of the University and the dean’s office pay much attention to students’ life. In 2011 the students of the general medicine faculty were granted the modern building of Hostel #10. The 6th year students finish their sub internship, a peculiar preclinical training in four main branches of the specialty «General Medicine»: therapy, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, anesthesiology and intensive care.

 

STUDENT SANATORIUMTHERAPEUTIC, DIAGNOSTIC AND CONSULTATIVE WORK OF THE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENTS AT CLINICAL BASES

 

The BSMU sanatorium is a medical preventive institution for the treatment and rehabilitation of students during the academic year. The sanatorium has general therapeutic profile for patients with the diseases of the cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal tract, musculoskeletal system, ENT diseases as well as problems with the respiratory system and the eyes.

 

STUDENT HEALTH UNIT

 

 

In the health unit one can get emergency medical care in case of diseases, injuries and poisoning. The health unit provides out-patient care of patients. According to indications a health care provider working there may put a student on a sick leave from one to three days or make him (her) exempt from physical education classes up to five days.

The teaching staff of the clinical departments specializing in Surgery successfully implements new methods of treatment such as the transplantation method of treating diabetes mellitus by grafting corresponding xenogeneic cell transplants; the surgical method of treating hyperparathyroidism by transplanting parathyrocytes.

 

 

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

 

Currently the University has concluded more than 60 agreements on collaboration with international research and educational institutions.

 

FORMS OF INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION INCLUDE:

  • exchange programs for the academic staff members, researchers and students;
  • development and implementation of joint research and training programs;
  • exchange of information and publications on academic and scientific issues;
  • publication of textbooks and monographs;
  • organization of joint scientific conferences and symposia.

Implementation of other mutually beneficial forms of cooperation in academic and research areas.

Annually Belarusian State Medical University is visited by about 30 delegations from Sweden, Iraq, Japan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Germany, Poland, Azerbaijan, Nigeria, Iran, Turkmenistan, Canada, Lithuania, Israel and other countries.

 

 

MASTER CLASSES, SEMINARS, LECTURES, TELECONFERENCES

 

Master classes, seminars and lectures on current medical issues conducted by international specialists for our academic staff, undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate students and medical residents play a major role in the development of the University. Participation of foreign colleagues in joint diagnostic and therapeutic activities and sharing their expertise and experience with Belarusian specialists is also of vital importance for maintaining and refining teaching quality.

International colleagues from partner universities annually deliver more than 30 lectures at conferences with international participation organized by Belarusian State Medical University within the framework of the established scientific and academic cooperation programs.

 

 

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR COLLABORATION

 

BSMU actively uses modern information technologies in organizing different events with international participation. Internet Conferences and video bridges held at the University allow the students to listen to the lectures by leading international experts and get acquainted with current achievements in medicine of such countries as Italy, Japan, Lithuania and Russia.

Traditional “Moscow – Minsk – Khabarovsk – Vladivostok” teleconference is arranged by joint efforts of Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry, BSMU and the Medical Universities of Vladivostok and Khabarovsk.

On-line seminars with video conferencing, demonstration of educational materials (presentations, documents, video and audio clips), case-studies, on-line tests and examination assignments and moderated online discussions involving internationally-renowned professors and leading home experts create new opportunities for distance learning and make such webinars an effective educational tool.
